Water - The Source of Life

Welcome! In our day to day lives, we are continually bombarded with never-ending tasks and chores. It is very easy to take the simple things in life for granted. Water is one of those things that always seems to be neglected.

Covering more than 70% of Earth's surface, water is the most common substance on Earth. It is basically everywhere; oceans, rivers, lakes, the ground, and the air we breathe all contain water. Without the presence of water, there can be no life. However, water is not only a necessity. It is also used both directly and indirectly for entertainment, and as a way to improve the quality of our lives.

Water is an odorless, tasteless, transparent liquid that is colorless in small amounts but exhibits a bluish tinge in large quantities. The percentage of available worldwide water that we use today can be astonishing. Almost all of it (approximately 97%) is in the oceans, but this water is too salty to be used for drinking, farming, and manufacturing. Only about 3% of the world's water is fresh. Most of this water is not easily available to people; 2% is locked in icecaps and other glaciers, and half of the 1% leftover is beneath the Earth's surface as groundwater. Fortunately, there is as much water on Earth today as there ever was, or ever will be, because of a continuous water cycle.
